Wear your purses more comfortably

An outfit isn’t complete without the perfect handbag. There is no denying that matching a stylish purse with your favorite outfit is the ultimate way to step up the entire look. However,Ā many of us are spending our days lugging around a bag that undoubtedly weighs too much, and possibly even wreaking havoc on our bodies. According to Prevention, a few conditions that come along with carrying a bag that’s too heavy include scoliosis, tension headaches, osteoarthritis, strained muscles and nerve microtrauma. Luckily, there are a few things you can do to make your purse more manageable:

You don’t need nearly as much stuff as you keep in your purse.

Wear it across your body

Not only are cross body bagsĀ stylish, but they’re also best for your body. If your bag is uncomfortable hanging on one side, hang it across your body so the muscles in your torso are carrying more of the load than your back and shoulders. This distributes the weight more evenly and allows you to avoidĀ putting the brunt of the weight on a single area . The results are practically immediate as well. Keep this in mind the next time your back aches while you’re shopping!

Consider the straps

The length of the straps on your bagĀ aren’t the only important aspect to take into account. The width is just as important. A purse with thin straps may look chic and can certainly do the job if they’re attached to a small bag. However, if you’re shopping for a large bag for everyday use, you’ll want to make sure the straps are wide, and if possible, padded. A heavy purse with too-thin straps will cut into your shoulder – and this is never comfortable!

Downsize

We all know what it’s like to try to shove your entire life into your bag – just in case! However, carrying around loads of miscellaneous things is just asking for back pain. Chiropractor Emily KiberdĀ told Glamour that your purse should always weigh fewer than 10 pounds. Consider trading your all-encompassing giant purse for a practical clutch handbag that only allows you to carry what you explicitly need for the day. You’d be surprised at how you can toss that date book and four shades of lipstick when you physically have no place to put them!
